Where is the Innovation in Business Travel?

Greg Abbott, SVP of Travel & Hospitality at DataArt, discusses innovation in business travel with Travel Media Group during DataArt’s Travel Question Time event at the Harvard Club of New York City.

Travel Media Group: So where is the innovation in business travel?

Greg Abbott: We’ve observed several megatrends in the industry. The consumerization of IT is number one. The business travel, for better or for worse, has always been a runner-up in terms of its innovation efforts to leisure, so we see that the way the suppliers are pushing things are more direct and this megatrend of consumerization in IT is creating an environment that we think will bring some innovation in business travel.

Travel Media Group: I get a sense that business travel is an area you are spending more and more time in.

Greg Abbott: It is. Business travel is a complex environment, there is a B to B to C, if you will, the traveler is the end consumer so there is a number of customers and there are also vendors involved, the distribution channels. It makes for a complex ecosystem. Those that are serving the travelers are finally taking a real focus and interest and I think that is largely driven by the consumers who are demanding it. They are tired of being forced to regulatory compliance. A lot of the companies that are working in the space are realizing, hearing, listening and are starting to work with travelers on how to make it more flexible, how to make it less intrusive and less of an obstacle.”
